As this protective cartilage deteriorates, inflammation increases and joint damage progresses. Over time, bone-on-bone contact can occur, leading to worsening pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. Knee osteoarthritis develops gradually, with symptoms typically worsening over time. It affects the entire joint, including cartilage, bone and surrounding soft tissues, not just the cartilage alone.

What Is Knee Osteoarthritis?
