MCL Treatment
Non-Surgical Treatment
Most isolated MCL injuries are treated conservatively:

Recovery typically ranges from 3–4 weeks for mild sprains to 8–12 weeks for more severe tears.
Surgical Treatment
Surgery is uncommon but may be considered if:
- The tear is Grade 3
- Multiple ligaments are injured
- Instability persists after conservative treatment
Surgical options may include repair or reconstruction using a tissue graft. Recovery after MCL surgery varies but often requires several months of rehabilitation.
Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Injury
What Is the LCL?
The LCL runs along the outer side of the knee and connects the femur to the fibula. It prevents the knee from bending outward (varus stress).
LCL injuries are less common than MCL injuries but can be more complex.
Causes of LCL Injuries
- Direct blow to the inside of the knee
- Hyperextension injuries
- Twisting or pivoting movements
- High-impact trauma
- Falls or motor vehicle accidents
Symptoms of an LCL Injury
- Pain on the outer knee
- Swelling
- Instability
- Stiffness
- Numbness if nearby nerves are affected
LCL Treatment

Surgical Care

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injury
What Is the PCL?
The PCL is one of the two cruciate ligaments inside the knee joint. It prevents the tibia from moving backward relative to the femur and provides posterior stability.
The PCL is stronger than the ACL and is injured less frequently.
Common Causes of PCL Tears
- “Dashboard injury” in motor vehicle accidents
- Falling onto a bent knee
- Direct blow to the front of the knee
- Hyperextension
