New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks had surgery on his right foot
Friday according to ESPNNewYork.com. Sarang Desai, DO comments:
Hakeem Nicks underwent surgery of his fifth metatarsal recently. The fifth
metatarsal is the long bone on the outside of the foot. There are several
types of fractures of the fifth metatarsal, one in particular, called
a Jones fracture can be quite troublesome. A Jones fracture occurs in
a region with a precarious blood supple and therefor often has trouble
healing. In athletes, placing a screw to stabilize the bone is often favored.
Although the surgery is performed through a small incision, healing will
take 6-12 weeks. In all the best circumstances an athlete may begin running
at 6 weeks, but then will need rehabilitation before getting back on the
field. I would expect him to miss between 2-3 months.
