Patient Information: Are You Aware of Nursemaid's Elbow?

Nursemaid's Elbow (Pulled Elbow Syndrome) is a very common injury to kids who are 2-3 years of age. It occurs when the child's elbow is fully extended (straightened) and traction is applied to the child's wrist or hand. For example, when a young child is lifted or swung by the forearm, or, a child suddenly steps down off a curb or stair while a parent is holding the wrist or hand. The child may exibit pain, reluctance to use that arm or just may hold their arm to the side. If this occurs to your child, bring them to the orthopedic office for treatment. Typically, there is a simple maneuver performed by the doctor in the office that will take care of this problem. Rememeber, watch how you are grabbing your child's hand.
