What is Occupational Therapy?
Hand therapy is provided by either an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist for a person who has an impairment or condition affecting the functional use of the hand or upper extremity.
These licensed therapists have specialized training, education and extensive experience related to treatment of issues of the hand or upper extremity. They work closely with the physicians to provide a comprehensive therapy program to address all issues affecting the patient’s function.
Any person who has sustained an injury to the hand or upper extremity resulting in fractures, sprains, burns, amputations, wounds, lacerations of tendons or nerves, would benefit from the specialized training and knowledge of a hand therapist. Other problems treated may be tendonitis, nerve compression and overuse symptoms.
Hand therapy consists of a comprehensive evaluation of the hand and upper extremity. The therapist will determine limitations, symptoms, problems and develop and implement a treatment plan. This likely will involve splinting, pain management, education for self-management of symptoms, ergonomics and body mechanics, range of motion and flexibility, strengthening and conditioning and sensory re-education.
